BLACK SUNDAY OFF-SEASON NEWS: GM's Kickoff to the New Season

What many of the Nation look forward to most... the OFFSEASON. With many holes abound, (for now) Coach Tom Cable will be heavily scrutinized leading into training camp.

As the final seconds of the Super Bowl wind down and all the glitz and glamour of awarding the Lombardi trophy to the victors… what majority of the remaining fans look forward to and place their “undying faith” in their teams is the offseason. Fueling this excitement typically begins with local sports talk radio shows filling the airwaves with offseason rumors and the excitement of the next crop of potential draft prospects who will help putting their teams over the top.

For most team owners and general managers, the offseason begins with releasing aging players who for the most part are no longer performing to their existing contracts. As evidenced by the recent release of former franchise players: LaDanian Tomlinson (Chargers) and Bryant Westbrook (Eagles); at the end of the day what counts most is not their respective loyalty nor what they accomplished in the past, but their current worth.

Can you blame GM’s parting ways with such players? Their main priority is to ensure their team field the best players who can help them win within financial reasons. With all due respect to both players considering both Tomlinson and Westbrook turning age 30 last year, the Shaun Alexander-syndrome (Edgerrgin James, Priest Holmes, Curtis Martin, Larry Johnson, need I name more?) has certainly seeped into reality for both.

For a majority of player contracts stipulating a guaranteed March roster bonus, there will certainly be additional note-worthy names joining LT2 and Westbrook on the NFL “unemployment” list.

(Not-so) SURPRISE MOVE: Frye to Start Over Struggling Russell

15 weeks into the season, the decision to bench (yet again) former overall #1 pick JaMarcus Russell in favor of another journeyman was clear-cut. Many speculate Charlie Frye's starting nod has serious implications on Russell's future with the Silver and Black. After several days of discussions, head coach Tom Cable, offensive coordinator Ted Tollner, and quarterbacks coach Paul Hackett unanimously agreed Charlie Frye offers the most potential in upsetting the Broncos this weekend.

Charlie Frye has not played a single snap this year and has not started a game since week 5 of 2008 for the Seattle Seahawks. Relegated to the practice squad, "It will be good to get back out there with the offense and run some plays that aren't on cards." Frye joked. "I've got a lot of fire in me. I've been that crutch and that supportive guy all season, so now it's my turn to be the fiery leader."

The prized $60M investment that is JaMarcus Russell has hit a serious wall and his future in doubt. Coach Tom Cable insists Russell is still the future of the team is and will continue to "be developed". Russell was unavailable for comment but said before the game against the Redskins that he still feels he is the STILL the Raiders quarterback of the future. The decision to start Charlie Frye over Russell further speculates Oakland may be looking to sever its ties with Russell, who signed a six-year contract in 2006 that included more than $30 million in guarantees.

Similiar in many facets to Bruce Gradkowski in terms of mobility and playing style, Charlie Frye brings fluidity to a position that has helped the team earn two late comeback victories in the past 4 games. Frye (just like Gradkowski) impressed Oakland's coaches with attention to detail in meetings and during practice. Again, Russell graded poorly in comparison during the same meetings and reps with the first unit.

Down to just two healthy quarterbacks, the Raiders signed former Bills starter J.P. Losman, who recently led the Las Vegas Locomotives to win the USFL's inaugural championship this season. This and the fact that Bruce Gradkowski has yet to have been added to the injured reserve list, has fueld even more speculation Russell will not see a snap again this season (and perhaps as a Raider).

TEAM NOTES:
TE Zach Miller still has not practiced (concussion, listed as questionable) and will be a game-time decision.
FS Michael Huff returned to practice today after re-injuring his shoulder (stinger) against the Redskins.
Darrius Heyward-Bey did not practice (sprained foot) and is doubtful for the Broncos game.
Greg Ellis sat out practice yet again (knee sprain) and is questionable this Sunday.

Gradkowski Suffers Torn MCL, JaMarcus-Led Raiders Lose

Yesterday’s loss to the Redskins was secondary news to the Raider Nation. The headliner that had many in a "headspin" was the indefinite loss of Raiders QB Bruce Gradkowski to a torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee and a partially torn MCL in his right. Gradkowski on suffering injuries to both knees: "I hurt my left knee in the first quarter on the first sack and kind of felt a pop but I didn’t think nothing of it. I just put a brace on it and kept going. The last play of the first half, it happened to my right knee and I heard a pop on that knee so then it was both knees. I tried taping it up for the second half but it wasn’t happening.”Asked on whether he’ll play again this season: “I don’t count myself out. You never need surgery with MCLs. I’ll try to get back, do whatever I can to get healthy fast if I could. That’s the only thing I worry about."

With Gradkowski going down; in came incumbent starter JaMarcus Russel and his unprecedented league low 47.7 quarterback rating. In just two quarters of relief, Russell connected on 10-of-16 passing attempts (0-TD and 1-INT) although the statistics show stark improvement the numbers are deceiving as he was under constant pressure (11 QB hurries and 6 sacks) and his lack of awareness to convert much needed first downs, led the way for the Redskins to pull away. Russell’s performance was so uninspiring that head coach Tom Cable pondered pulling Russell during the fourth quarter in favor of third-stringer Charlie Frye in hopes of sparking some much needed offensive flow.

When asked about naming his starter for next week’s showdown in Denver, “Let’s get to tomorrow and we’ll talk about that.” Attempting to sidestep the notion that he has lost complete confidence in Russell, “I thought it was a tough situation,” coach Tom Cable said. “You have to look at the film. Could he do better? Probably, but everybody could have.”

During post-game interviews coach Cable was asked about the overall performance of the team in yesterday’s loss: “Very disappointed, too many penalties, not enough flow offensively. Defensively, just really struggled it seemed like in the first half in the secondary and then we’re never able to come back and make a stand or do anything about it in the second half.”

NOTABLE INJURIES
QB Bruce Gradkowski: two torn MCLs on both knees. Season likely over.
TE Zach Miller left the game with head and shoulder injury. With a concussion suffered earlier in season, team doctors are concerned and Miller will be listed as “questionable”.
CB Nnamdi Asomugha suffered an injury to his right forearm on a blitz when he hit a helmet late in the first half. He returned late in the fourth quarter. “The arm just went dead. So we had to come in and take X-rays. They just feel like it’s more with the nerve. That’s why I went back in.” Nnamdi should be fine for next week.
FS Michael Huff suffered a stinger and did not return. Hiram Eugene replaced Huff and may get the start in Denver. Huff’s status is still uncertain but should be listed as probable during the week.

Raiders Duo Considered for Week 13 NFL Play of the Week

Pittsburgh native Bruce Gradkowski returned home to lead the Raiders against a tattered Steeler team. The fourth-year journeyman looked every bit Raider fans envisioned former 1st overall pick JaMarcus Russell was supposed to be as Gradkowski led the Raiders to a game-winning drive over a reeling Pittsburgh Steelers. With good protection and an uncanny pocket awareness, Gradkowsi threw for 308 yards and three touchdowns.

In what certainly looked to be a rout of the Raiders, the same story that has plagued Pittsburgh all season occurred yet again as the home fans watched in agony to see that their defending Super Bowl team could not close another game with a late lead. Because the game still close, the Raiders patience paid off as a confident Gradkowski finished off a fourth quarter 11-play drive connecting with WR Chaz Schilens on a 17 yd touchdown pass with 8 minutes remaining.

Although the Raiders defense gave up two touchdowns, the surprising young Raiders offense matched both touchdowns with 2 more of their own.

In a span of roughly 5 and a half minutes, Gradkowski tossed two touchdown passes to WR Louis Murphy to lead yet another Raiders come from behind victory. Standing at their own 25 and staring at a 3rd and 13; an ever confident Gradkowski play actioned RB Justin Fargas rolling out right and hit Murphy in stride on a 75-yd TD post pattern.

Here is where the game became interesting, unfolding before our very eyes (and you heard it hear first) the Bruce Gradkowski era has begun! Backed at their own 11 yard line and with only a minute-48 remaining in the game, Gradkowski completed pass after pass to his young receivers with a pivotal 24 yard desperation heave (more like Hail Mary) to (surprise) Murphy at the 17 yd line, who wisely jumped out of bounds. With nine seconds remaining, it was fitting fashion as Gradkowski closed the game out by hitting his favorite target from 11yds out for just the rookie's second game clinching touchdown in 3 weeks.

"In Gradkowski We Trust?" Raiders Brass Committed to QB OR to Salvage a Once Optimistic Season?

Pittsburgh native Bruce Gradkowski returns home to lead the Raiders against a tattered Steeler team.

Head coach Tom Cable continues to insist JaMarcus Russell is the long-term quarterback of the team. However, with the regression of the $60M project (Russell); Cable has committed to his 4th year journeyman quarterback to salvage a once promising season.

Since replacing Russell in the third quarter against the Chiefs in week 10, Gradkowski has been able to move the offense more effectively. Although not as physically gifted as Russell, Gradkowski provides the Raiders with decent pocket-awareness and leadership to a young Raider team who rank last in passing and 29th in turnovers. Many within the Raider Nation faithfuls' view Gradkowski as average at best however with just 2 starts under his belt look for vast improvements over his predecessor who seemed to regress in his just his third year.

Raider coaches have openly viewed Gradkowski's attributes to the Denver Donkey's Kyle Orton, a patient field manager who doesn't force throws and allows plays to develop. For the skeptics, consider this "not-so-fun": the Raider's offensive line ranks 25th in sacks given, not to mention the most quarterback hurries in the league. It is reasonable to believe Gradkowski will not put up Drew Brees or Peyton Manning numbers, so patience should be given as the young quarterback still adjusts to the speed of the game.

What has head coach Tom Cable and quarterbacks coach optimistic about Gradkowski is the fact that he is consistently on the same page as his young receivers, in particular Lance Murphy and first round pick Darrius Heyward-Bey. With the return of starter Chaz Shilens, there is finally a reason to be enthusiastic about what this quartet can bring to the offense.

Team insiders say the turning point for Gradkowski (and subsequent downfall of JaMarcus) was during the team's film session while preparing against the Chiefs. Many coaches (including receivers) were pleasantly surprised by Gradkowski's knowledge of the Raiders offensive playbook and ability to handle adjustments during Q&A film sessions of the opposing defense. JaMarcus in the meantime had trouble making the same adjustment reads and was encouraged to spend extra time with assistants viewing various defensive formations and blitz protection schemes.

For the time being, while Gradkowski is allowed time to "gel" with his receivers, look for the team to provide a heavy dose of the run game headed by the 3-headed monsters (DMC, Justin Fargas, and Michael Bush). (SEE MORE BELOW)

Time will tell how successful the team can be down the stretch however, he will certainly not be hailed as the team's savior, but Bruce Gradkowski has brought something to the table the team has lacked during the season: unfledged confidence in their field general and optimism for the faithful that is "the Raider Nation".

WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO:

KEEP JaMarcus on the BENCH! Figuring out the complexity of the Steeler's blitz-and-stunt schemes is like asking a high school dropout to explain Pythagora's theory. Communication amongst the offensive line and Gradkowski's ability to recognize the Steeler's defensive formations will be vital in keeping the young quarterback off his back and JaMarcus on the bench. OUTLOOK: Doesn't look too good for Gradkowski-fans, a late cameo appearance by JaMarcus will be on hand.

BATTLES TO WATCH
With a decent performance against all-world-sack-specialist DeMarcus Ware, LT Mario Henderson will face off against last year's Defensive Player of the Year and sack specialist Jerome Harrison. It is imperative for Henderson to maintain his ground in what may be his most formidable challenge of the year and not to mention in consecutive weeks. Communication with his linemen will be the key to this matchup.

CB Chris Johnson vs. WR Santonio Holmes. Dallas avoided cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha and the outcome was still a blowout. Look for the Steelers to target Chris Johnson early and often as the speedy Holmes will look to open up the passing game to allow for a more effective Steeler ground attack.

The Three-Headed-Running Backs vs. Steeler's Rush Defense. The Steelers rank third in the NFL in rushing defense and the 88 yards surrendered to Baltimore's Ray Rice last week was the most they've given up all season(YES this includes shutting down Chris Johnson, Cedric Benson and Adrian Peterson along the way!) Whats this mean for the Raiders ground game? All signs point to establishing a controlled short-passing game to set up the run game. The key here is to avoid turnovers (uh-oh) and leave the field position up to Shane Lechler. This only works if the Raiders defense can hold its own, slow the Steelers running game. OUTLOOK: Not so good with bad weather in the forecast, Lechler's leg will be the key, avoiding turnovers... yeah good luck.

PRESEASON PREVIEW: OAKLAND @ SAN FRANCISCO

The “Battle of the Bay” will be renewed on a cool Saturday August evening in Candlestick Park as the Raiders invade Niner country in preseason action.

With news of head coach Tom Cable accused of assault on fellow coach defensive assistant coach Randy Hanson, the heart breaking news of starting WR Chaz Schilens breaking his foot in a practice, and holding a joint practice with the Niners; look for the Raiders to take their aggression level to another level to release some pent up aggression on Saturday.

WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO:

With the recent release of sure Hall-of-Famer FB Lorenzo Neal and the return of Oren O’Neal, look for O’Neal to sit out for precautionary reasons giving way to backups Marcel Reece and Luke Lawton to pave way for the Raider ground game.

BATTLES TO WATCH
With a monumental performance against all-world-sack-specialist DeMarcus Ware, LT Mario Henderson will look to continue his awe-inspiring preseason against promising OLB Manny Lawson. With the return of All-Pro middle linebacker Patrick Willis, whose presence alone benefits Lawson the most as this athletic linebacker will test Henderson in consecutive weeks.

CBs Chris Johnson and Stanford Routt vs. WRs Isaac Bruce and Arnaz Battle. Not the most recognized names in the league, but this battle has epic proportions for all involved. Johnson and Routt will need to improve their man coverage to garner consideration for the right to start. Both have performed admirably in camp but not spectacular. Bruce and Battle will get considerable looks and game action to gain some chemistry with their youthful quarterbacks (Starter Shaun Hill and former #1 pick Alex Smith).

Wildcat? Single Wing? : Both teams have been experimenting with the Wildcat with hopes of introducing these formations during the game. Expect the Raiders attempt this early as DMC is the most capable RB of the bunch to handle the direct snap. In the Niner’s singlewing, WR Arnaz Battle will be taking the direct snaps with WR (former QB) Micheal Spurlock lining up outside. Just another reason to make for some entertaining preseason action? OR Are both looking join on the NFL trend and permanently add the formation?

CAMP NOTES:

The Three-Headed-Running Back rotation adds a fourth?: starter DMC will carry the ball a handful of times before the bulk of the first half carries will be split again between Justin Fargas and Michael Bush. Fargas carried just once for 2 yards while Bush averaged 7.7 yards on his three carries. In the second half, 4th RB Louis Rankin (six carries for 31 yards and a touchdown and one pass for a 19-yard gain) to carry the load again. Rankin has raised some eyebrows with his downhill running style and making it all the more difficult for the coaching staff in an already crowded backfield.

Thin Receiving Corps: With news of last week’s star WR Chaz Schilens going down with a broken foot and his status for opening the season against the Chargers in serious doubt, the team will rely on two speedy yet inconsistent receivers Johnnie Higgins and rookie Darius Heyward-Bey to step up and contribute right away. Both have dropped far too many balls and will be given opportunities against the Niners. With Javon Walker still recovering from knee surgery and 4th rd pick Louis Murphy sidelined with a hip injury; although projected 5th on the depth chart, WR Nick Miller has made the most of his opportunities by lining up with the first offense in practice. It was Miller who made a spectacular 48-yard catch last week against the Cowboys to put the Raiders near the goal line to set Rankin’s touchdown.
BATTLE TO WATCH: Heyward-Bey vs. Nate Clements. The inconsistency of HB and his propensity to drop sure balls, has many wondering if this trend will continue in game action. Look for HB to get a hefty number of looks for the coaching staff to have enough video to analyze and correct this flaw immediately.

Corner Backs just Offensive? All-Pro CB-stud Nmandi Asomugha suffering a minor hip flexor, it was evident Raider brass felt the current unit was in need of some fresh competition when they added with the addition of CB Ricky Manning Jr. A stout man-man corner, Manning is an ideal fit for the Raiders new attacking defense which calls for consistent man-coverage. Look for the competition for starting opposite Asomugha and the nickleback positions to heat up between Manning, Chris Johnson, and Stanford Routt. With Asomugha out for the game, the three will be given every opportunity to showcase their abilities against a not-so threatening 49er quarterback and receiving corps.

Other Position Battles Worth Noting

Starting FS Hiram Eugene and incumbent FS Michael Huff are both making some noise with ferocious hits and pass deflections in training camp. During the recent joint practice with the 49ers; both Eugene and Huff were making life difficult for Niner receivers attempting to make catches over the middle with a handful of bone crushing hits. The highly athletic Huff seems to have a renewed sense of energy that is spilling over to Eugene. This makes for entertaining television for Raider fans who have longed for a consistent ball-hawking safety.

Raiders Prevail Over Cowboys in Preseason Opener

Post-game News and Notes

The GOOD:
QB JaMarcus Russell played just 2 series vs. the Dallas 1st unit defense. It was evident Russell’s pocket presence has improved greatly under the tutelage of new quarterbacks coach Paul Hackett. JR managed an efficient in passing attack completing 6 of 9 passes for 50 yds. More importantly, he escaped unscathed in the face of constant pressure. DID YOU SEE the two deep-lobbed passes intended for WRs Schilens and Heyward-Bey? Both were obvious under throws. Not to worry, this chemistry will develop in time (Let err rip JR!). Consistency will be the key in Russell’s development.

WR Chaz Schilens, the second year player out of San Diego State, made his presence known early in the game in becoming the Raiders #1 receiver. Great hands, adjustment to the ball, and the awareness to continue plays impressed coaches enough to cement his status as Russel’s “go-to-guy”.

HB Darren McFadden electrified “the Nation” with his limited touches needing only 3 carries for 63 yds. (long of 45yds). DMC is primed and ready to begin the season.

WR Darrius Heyward-Bey’s top-end speed was on display and Dallas wanted nothing of it; consistently double teaming the rookie in his first two deep passes from Russell. DHB finished the night with 1 catch for 8 yds.

HB Michael Bush: 2 touches 18 yds. Although a holding penalty negated a 9 yd run, Bush ran effectively with the 1st unit O-line. Did you see Bush’s fantastic pass protection?

LT Mario Henderson did a fantastic job facing DE DaMarcus Ware when the 1st units faced off: 0 tackles, 0 sacks, 0 QB pressure.

Second and Third stringers showing some grit:
FS backup Michael Huff had flashes of improvement (1 int), however had a relapse of interference-nidis.

WR Louis Murphy is continuing his hot training camp start by showcasing his separation skills against Dallas backups, although he did not get many looks, the film showed great routes and good blocking skills (albeit the one holding penalty) finishing with 2 catches for 40 yds.

MLB Isaiah Ekejiuba showed promise in his opportunity on the field. Expect this special teams demon to continue to be a force on special teams and contributor in spelling starter Kirk Morrison.

QB Bruce Gradkowski impressed enough to take the lead in his bid to become the Raiders 3rd QB over Charlie Frye.

THE BAD:

HB Justin Fargas: 1 carry 2 yds. A holding penalty does not hide the fact of Fargas’ poor decision to dive over a crowded pile (at the 2 yd line) rather than staying on his feet or attempting to bounce outside. Fargas will need to rebound in practice to warrant more carries with the much hungrier Bush getting more looks in different packages due to his blocking ability.

CB Stanford Routt was burned several times while filling in for injured starter CB Chris Johnson. Routt will need to improve on man coverage or John Bowie may start to get some playing time in Routt’s-assumed nickel package.

Raider Run Defense was outstanding in the first series (mainly due to fantastic special teams play in the opening game field position) and holding bruising HB Marion Barber (4 carries,13yds); however HB Felix Jones exposed the Raiders to speedy

THE UGLY:

The first unit offensive Line had mixed results against Dallas’ first unit defense. Pass protection will be the focus of this upcoming week. Although the first unit surrendered just 1 sack, Raider quarterbacks were constantly under pressure. At times the the run blocking was great for DMC and M-Bush, but not so for Fargas. Penalties again plagued the unit as Dallas’ pressure turned up the heat to test this makeshift unit.

PENALTIES-PENALTIES-PENALTIES continue to plague this young team on both sides of the ball.

PRESEASON PREVIEW: DALLAS COWBOYS AT OAKLAND RAIDERS

ATTENTION DIE HARD SILVER-AND-BLACK LOYALISTS! The gridiron drought will officially end when “America’s Team” visits the Raider Nation on a summer Thursday night to kickoff the preseason.

Obviously, the game play will not be equivalent to the regular season hype, however it gives Raider fans the opportunity to view younger players such as WR D. Heyward-Bey, SS M. Mitchell, RB M. Bush, etc. to showcase their skills and either make a strong case to start or become a major contributor this upcoming season.

WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO:

The Three-Headed-Running Back rotation : starter DMC will carry the ball a handful of times before the bulk of the carries will go to Justin Fargas and Michael Bush. The competition between these two will draw much more interest due to the long-term implication of either’s future with the club. Both Fargas (4M/yr) and Bush (540K/yr) contracts will expire after the 2011 season.

Battle of the Trenches: With limited action for the first units for both teams, expect an all out fight as Dallas’ vaunted defensive front seven will savor the opportunity to attack a makeshift Raider first unit offensive line. BATTLE TO WATCH: LT Mario Henderson (5 career starts) vs. OLB DaMarcus Ware (20 sacks in 08’)

Run D-E-F-E-N-S-E DTs Tommy Kelly and Gerrard Warren will need to use this game to master new defensive coordinator’s John Marshall newly instituted attacking defense. The mountainous DTs and LBs will face a formidable offensive line. Just like the Raiders-trio, The Cowboy run game will feature a three headed RB rotation consisting of bruising back Marion Barber, the fleet footed Felix Jones, and the versatile Tashard Choice. BATTLE TO WATCH: DE Greg Ellis vs. his old teammates. Expect Ellis to give an all-out-effort and prove Cowboy Owner/GM Jerry Jones wrong for cutting him loose.

Raider Wideouts vs. Cowboy DBs : JR should have a decent couple of series considering both starting cornerbacks for Dallas will not participate in the preseason opener. With WRs Darrius Heyward-Bey and Johnnie Higgins game time listed as probable, look for Chaz Schilens and Lance Murphy to get a hefty amount of looks.

CB N. Asomugha vs. WR R. Williams Pressure is on Williams to produce and what better opportunity against the league elite shutdown CB. Don’t expect a steady stream of Romo-to-Williams connection as Asomugha will continue to add fuel to the fire.

What to expect : The game will be a welcome back for “the Nation” to see the Silver and Black back on the field. The starters will see a couple of series and then give way to the second and third team units. Although the outcome of the game has no merit to the upcoming season, the position battles and game experience will help the team prepare for the next.

CAMP NOTES:

Who’s Snapping to JR? With 08 starter Jake Groves gone, the battle between third-year Samson Satele and 12 year veteran John Wade will pickup steam as coach Cable will have to decide which line will offer the best protection to JR.

Protecting the Blindside Newcomer Khalif Barnes was supposed make a push to start at LT but after breaking his ankle recently, Mario Henderson has made the most of his opportunity with the first unit.

Training Camp Position Battles: Defensive Line – Uncertainties Abound

Time of possession is a crucial statistic that every team yearns to win in each contest. Keeping the opponents offense off the field means less opportunities for them to put points on the board. For this reason many within "the Nation" will agree that all eyes will be on the defensive line for 2009. With last year’s decrepit performance, the line will need to improve the 31st ranked run defense or drastic changes will made.

Considered the weak link of the Raiders defense, in 2008 opposing teams repeatedly ran the ball at will and over powered the Raiders defensive front seven. After 5 seasons team owner Al Davis had "enough" and dismissed former defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. His replacement former Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator, John Marshall, has the credentials but will certainly have his hands full with this particular unit.

With the recent trade of former two-time All-Pro defensive end Derrick Burgess to the New England Patriots, the move closes the chapter of what many have been anticipating since the arrival of newly acquired Greg Ellis. With the injury-prone Burgess now gone, look for rookie Matt Shaughnessy, second-year Trevor Scott, and third-year Jay Richardson to engage in a heated training camp battle to start opposite Ellis.

Scott performed amicably in Burgess’ absence particularly in run defense; however he may lack the size to sustain the length of an entire season. Richardson lacks the strength but his edge speed and athleticism makes him ideal to be a regular in passing situations. Shaughnessy will be the unknown factor. Although he impressed coaches during OTAs, Shaughnessy will need to continue that momentum into training camp to leap over his more experienced peers. I see a series of split starts between Scott and Richardson.

This year will be vital for DT Tommy Kelly to prove to the organization that he is worth the $50.5 million contract he signed in 2007. Kelly is certainly a force to recon with in the middle however, too many times last year the mammoth DT would disappear and no longer commanded double teams during most games. In what he deems his best shape in his young career, the former undrafted DT will inevitably prove his doubters wrong and make his presence known in the league.

Starting alongside Kelly will be journeyman Gerard Warren who looks to maintain playing time over mountainous Terrell Sands. Warren’s experience and speed to penetrate will compliment Kelly’s bulky presence. Sands plays with plenty of vigor early in the games but just like Kelly, he consistently continues to be swallowed up by much smaller (quicker) lineman thus not allowing linebackers to attack ball carriers freely.

The departed Burgess will be missed for his ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks however with the arrival of Ellis, the converted outside linebacker can return to his natural DE position and focus on run support and sacks. The Raiders pass defense will rely solely on how the unit can respond to teams pounding the ball on the ground. If the interior defensive linemen cannot win the battle in the trenches and improve the run defense, look for changes abound or a possible overhaul in 2010.

Training Camp Position Battles: Defensive Backs – Strength or Reason for Concern?

There is little concern in the “Nation” over the team’s defensive backfield or should there be? With the team finishing tenth overall in pass defense, did these numbers justify this DB unit as a team strength? Or does it skew the fact that teams consistently abandoned their passing attack and repeatedly overpowered this 31st ranked run defense? Lets investigate…

When facing the Oakland Raiders the one name that instilled the most fear into offensive coordinators is consensus All-Pro Nnamdi Asomugha, who has cemented himself has a bonafide shutdown cornerback in the league. During the 2007 and 2008 regular season, teams repeatedly refused to throw in his direction, leaving many passes intended for “the other-side”. That “other-side” position is currently held by third-year pro Chris Johnson.

Thrown into the fire when former starter DeAngelo Hall was released late into the 2008 season, Johnson fared well with marked improvement impressing coaches and management with his natural abilities and ability to adjust to the ball. With 6 career starts, Johnson certainly has the more experience over closest competitor Stanford Routt in the rights to start opposite Asomugha. Entering his fourth year, Routt was in the dog house with the coaching staff in 2008 for his lackadaisical approach to preparation and attitude.

During OTA’s, Routt, Justin Miller, John Bowie, and Jason Horton were given opportunities to showcase their abilities (when Asomugha and Johnson were not in attendance) with the first squad and each had mixed result. Routt showed marked improvement but looks like he will start the season as the primary nickel back. Miller is viewed more as a primary threat in the return game, thus will not see much action barring any injury to the starters.

The Safety positions look to be a more intriguing battle in training camp. At Free Safety look for the battle between second-year Hiriam Eugene and Rookie Mike Mitchell to be hard fought with Eugene prevailing. Mitchell, a former Ohio State Buckeye and surprise second round selection did little to impress coaches during OTA’s due to a nagging hamstring injury; however it was his intelligence in team meetings and outstanding work ethic during the off-season that gave a lasting impression on the coaching staff. Look for experience to be the deciding factor in Eugene returning as the starter for the 09 season.

At Strong Safety, Michael Huff will either compete with Mitchell or converted cornerback Tyvon Branch for the rights to start opposite Eugene. Former FS starter Huff, will be given another shot to redeem himself after a lackluster first half of the 2008 season in which he was supplanted by Eugene. With the “first-round” money invested in Huff, look for an all-out-effort for him to solidify himself in his bid to start opposite Eugene. If not, look for his outright release.

Overall, the cornerback positions will see no starting changes from the 2008 season. The Safety positions will be a key factor in how this unit responds. Don’t expect a dominant effort, however with a weak AFC west passing attack (outside of San Diego), look for this unit to play well enough to keep the team afloat within the division.

Training Camp Position Battles: Quarterback - Russell or Garcia?

The training camp battle between incumbent JaMarcus Russell and new free-agent acquisition Jeff Garcia will certainly be on of the most watched position battles. The last time both were on the field coincidentally was against one another.

Closing out the 2008 season on a positive note was vital to the growth of JaMarcus Russell. In the season finale against Tampa Bay, the former #1 overall draft pick did just that. Russell managed an efficient game passing for 148 yards and two touchdowns and gaining confidence in the 31-24 Raider victory. With injuries to both Darren McFadden and Justin Fargas, the day was highlighted by third string running back Michael Bush’s career 177 yards and two rushing touchdowns.

In comparison, Jeff Garcia walked off the field in disbelief and shock. Starting the season 9-3 and riding high, the former Tampa Bay QB needed only a single win to secure the team a spot in the playoffs. However, the team soon was bought back to earth losing 4 consecutive games, failing to make the playoffs, and completing the biggest collapse in Buccaneers history.

Now the two quarterbacks find themselves battling face-to-face yet again. A hungry second year starting QB looking for the breakout year the team has invested so highly in, while a talented journeyman looks to resurrect his career. Both have individual aspirations but both seeking a common purpose and goal: to return a proud franchise from being considered by many as one of the laughing-stocks of the league to respectability.

Al Davis is content that his aspiring third year quarterback is primed and ready to lead the team into the 2009 season. However, last season coach Tom Cable at times expressed concern over Russell’s pocket-presence and impatience to allow plays to progress. Former coaches and teammates agree that JaMarcus needs to improve his conditioning and overall work ethic (on- and off the field) to gain the trust of teammates and lead the organization.

With Garcia on board, the heated competition for the starting nod may just be the spark Russell needs to take his game to the next level. Whispers within the organization see Garcia’s presence and leadership as a possible second coming of Rich Gannon, who as a career journeyman flourished as a Raider. Garcia’s mobility and precision arm will certainly make it much harder on the coaching staff to etch Russell’s starting status in stone.

Several reports out of minicamp reveal the quarterback battle has been much closer than expected. Russell’s arm strength was on display yet again, routinely hitting deep balls and noticeable improvement in the short-to-intermediate routes. Garcia on the other hand consistently hit his short-to-mid-range targets in stride. The only drawback was Garcia’s lack of arm strength. Many deep balls seemed to float, thus allowing defenders to make plays or route adjustments were needed. Although it is still early, neither quarterback has done enough to distance each other.

Looking to reprieve his reputation, JaMarcus Russell surprised many within the organization when he recently announced that “everybody that plays receiver and wears the (Raiders) uniform” will attend a voluntary workout session at an undisclosed location following the conclusion of minicamp. With the month long lull until training camp, this opportunity will benefit both Russell and rookie receivers looking to gain a spot on the team.

It's doubtful Garcia will attend (newborn) and uncertainty of backups Bruce Gradkowski and Charlie Frye, look for this chemistry building session as a stepping-stone to gaining the trust of the organization. With the ever hard working Garcia on Russell’s heels, it is imperative for Russell to get as much work in as possible to prove the organization that he is worth every penny ($60M to be exact) to be the leader of this young Raider team.

The third string position will also be a hard fought battle between Andrew Walter, Fry, and Gradkowski. With limited reps, it looks as though each will have to showcase their skills with little or no error against the first string defense. Unless both Russell or Garcia go down with injuries, neither are expected to contribute in the regular season. This may have be the end of Walter's career in a Raider uniform if he is unable to attain the third QB spot. Look for an early release for either of the three in the first round of cuts of training camp.

Overall, the starting position is JaMarcus Russell’s to lose. He should (and will) be given every opportunity to come away as the starting QB at the conclusion of training camp. However; should the team falter early in the season look for Garcia to come off the bench and lead the team the rest of the season (barring injury or complete meltdown). This looks to be one of the most watched QB battles in the league and a tell-tale sign of Russell’s future with the Silver and Black. With a weak AFC West division, the Raiders QB-duo look to be a force to recon with regardless of whom is behind center.

The question begins, Michael Bush or Justin Fargus? The Raiders #1 Draft Darren Mcfadden isn't going anywhere, but who is the better 1, 2 punch for the Oakland Raiders. Justin Fargus had a breakout 2007 season which got him the starting position and an extended 3 year contract. Now with Bush in the scene in his 2nd season with the Raiders, now had the opportunity to turn heads in the last game of the season against a desperate Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Setting a career high rushing over 177 yards with 27 carries could be the answer to the Raiders already strong running game. Michael Bush, a bigger back than Fargus could be a big threat along with the speedy Mcfadden just like the Marcus Allen and Bo Jackson days. It makes more sense with Bush in the back field against another speedy hard running back like fargus. Yes, Fargus can run the ball and get those tough yards, but with 2 small speed backs doesn't change the defenses schemes. If the Raiders wants a balanced team like Tom Cable always says Bush and Mcfadden is the future and brings balance to the offense.
